The Broadway Cafe began roasting coffee in 1998.  Moving 150lb. bags of green coffee from all over the world through a cafe full of people was fun, but in 2003 we decided we needed more room to spread out.  We moved the Roaster about a block away, on Westport Road and opened the Broadway Roasting Co.  Our original 12kilo Diedrich was running nonstop, roasting for our Cafe and some of the best Coffeehouses and restaurants in Kansas City.  So, in 2007 we decided to find a bigger roaster.  We knew and loved the environmentally friendly, gentle heat transfer of the IR series Diedrich roasters.  Roasting full-time, six days a week on the IR12 made the idea of an IR40 very appealing.  The only problem was, Diedrich stopped making that size about the same time we bought our first roaster.  What to do?  Rebuild an old IR40 and make it better than it was when it was brand new, what else?

Our new Roaster is now up and running just a block north of our original Cafe.  The Westport Fire Station #19 had been vacant for a year, so when it became available in 2007, we jumped at the chance to expand, and stay in Westport.

Our Roasting location,at 4012 Washington, is open seven days a week, with a full espresso bar and the aromas of fresh roasted coffee.  With our new, larger roaster, we're excited to now be able to offer our coffee for sale online. All of our coffee is roasted per order, with the roast date printed on the bag.  When you place an order online, we'll send you the same delicious coffee we serve at the Broadway Cafe.
